Unity at St Mary’s DSG

- Mrs Nelisiwe Zwane

On 11 June 2026 at St Mary’s DSG, the campus was transformed into a vibrant celebration of national pride as the students arrived dressed in Bafana Bafana jerseys, Springbok green and gold, and bright yellow and green soccer shirts representing local teams. From early morning, the school corridors echoed with excitement, laughter, and the unmistakable energy of a nation ready to stand behind its team as the World Cup opened.

What made the day truly special was not only the colour and creativity of the outfits, but the spirit of togetherness that filled the school. Students from all grades came together in a shared moment of support for South Africa national soccer team, showing that sport has the power to unite us beyond the classroom, beyond differences, and beyond individual interest. The message was clear: we stand together, we support together, and we celebrate together.

Teachers also joined in the spirit of the day, reminding learners that sport teaches valuable life lessons: teamwork, resilience, respect, and unity. The symbolism of standing together in one colour reflected exactly what the World Cup represents on a global stage, countries coming together through the love of the game.

St Mary’s DSG once again proved that learning goes beyond the classroom. It lives in moments like these, where spirit, culture, and community come alive in celebration.
