The St Mary's DSG Science Expo: Displays of Innovation

- Miss Olivia Barker in Grade 12

On the 14th of May, St Mary’s DSG hosted its second annual science expo in the Diocesan hall. There was a total of 37 projects on display, ranging across various scientific disciplines and presented by students from various schools. We were privileged to host various expert judges from the University of Pretoria Science departments, who assisted in judging the expo alongside some of our own staff. I also had the honour of being asked to judge at the expo, due to my experience as a finalist at the Eskom Science expo last year.

The pride with which the students presented their project was inspiring, showing that a passion for innovation is not limited by age. The transition from being an Eskom expo participant last year to a judge at the school expo this year was daunting at first, but alongside the other judges I found that I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. In addition to the wonderful energy in the hall, it was lovely to see members of the St Mary's DSG community coming to support and learn about their friends’ projects, as well as connecting with learners from other schools. Science, innovation, and learning are powerful forces that connect people, and the expo displayed this beautifully.

Since last year, the St Mary’s DSG Science expo has undergone immense growth, and will no doubt continue this trajectory in the years to come. For all the participants and winners at the event, thank you and well done! A huge congratulations to Mr van Wyk, Mrs Jenkins, and their team for pulling this fantastic expo together! The day was inspiring and enjoyed by all those involved. The growth of the expo could not have been possible without your skill, perseverance, and passion.
