Grade 6 Democracy
The Grade 6 girls recently enjoyed an exciting integrated learning experience that brought History, English and their Real Life4Kids programme together in a meaningful way. As part of their study of democracy, the girls designed creative campaign posters as they ran for the role of mayor of their Real Life4Kids towns. In English, they planned, prepared and confidently delivered persuasive mayoral speeches to their classmates. Their learning culminated in a realistic election day, with the History classroom transformed into an official voting station complete with voting booths, a ballot box, a voter register and voting procedures. The girls experienced the democratic process firsthand as they cast their votes to elect their mayors. It was a wonderful cross-curricular activity that deepened their understanding of democracy while developing their communication, critical thinking and active citizenship skills.
