Grade 10 Camp in the Drakensberg – A Journey of Grit and Growth
Each year, St Mary’s DSG commits to extending the educational experience of its students by organising camps that form an integral part of the academic curriculum. From 18 to 23 January 2026, our Grade 10 girls participated in this compulsory and enriching programme in the beautiful Monk’s Cowl area of the Central Drakensberg.
The camp programme, which is reviewed annually to ensure meaningful impact, once again offered a rich and diverse range of experiences. The focus remained firmly on developing teamwork, collaboration, trust and mutual support — qualities essential for young women preparing to take their place as confident leaders.
Despite being greeted by cold and wet weather during the first two days, the girls displayed remarkable grit and perseverance. Rather than allowing the conditions to dampen their spirits, they pushed through bravely, encouraging one another every step of the way. It was inspiring to witness how each learner rose to the challenge and successfully completed the journey.
Throughout the week, groups hiked between 4 and 10 kilometres per day across the breathtaking Drakensberg landscape. Students were responsible for preparing their own meals, sleeping in tents and managing without formal ablution facilities, experiences that required resilience, adaptability and practical problem-solving.
The adventure programme included highlights such as canoeing on the river, an exciting canopy tour in the Drakensberg, and mountain biking. These activities not only stretched the girls physically but also built confidence, courage and trust within their teams.
The benefits of a camp such as this for Grade 10 girls are significant. Away from their usual comfort zones, students develop independence, self-discipline and leadership skills. They learn to rely on one another, communicate effectively under pressure and discover inner strength they may not have realised they possessed. Experiences like shared challenges, outdoor living and collaborative tasks foster deep friendships and a strong sense of community.
Each year we receive overwhelmingly positive feedback from our girls, and 2026 was no exception. The girls returned tired but proud, with stronger bonds, greater resilience and memories that will last a lifetime.
We commend the Class of 2028 for their courage and positive spirit, and we thank the staff who ensured a safe and meaningful experience for all.
