Reflection on Redfest Arts Festival

- Mrs Ronelle Markgraaff

The day began with SESSION 1, where all students watched the powerful “Born Naked” performance. This thought-provoking production immediately set the tone for the day, sparking meaningful discussions among the students.

In SESSION 2, the Grade 11s attended a performed reading of “Sophiatown”, which offered them fresh insight into poetic and narrative performance styles. The Grade 12s benefited greatly from the “Born Naked” Talk, where they explored the deeper themes and creative choices behind the production they had just witnessed.

After lunch, the Grade 11s were captivated by the performance of “You Strike a Woman You Strike a Rock” during SESSION 3. Meanwhile, the Grade 12s had the freedom to choose from a range of inspiring workshops and talks, including Physical Theatre, Set Design, Musical Theatre Partnering. These options allowed them to explore different aspects of performance and backstage craft, broadening their understanding of theatre-making.

Finally, in SESSION 4, all students gathered for the insightful “You Strike a Woman You Strike A Rock” Talk, which deepened their appreciation for the historical and cultural significance of South African theatre.

Our students could not stop talking about the work they experienced throughout the day. The performances, readings, talks, and workshops sparked lively conversations and fresh ideas. We are excited to see how their newfound knowledge, skills, and inspiration will enrich their own performances throughout the rest of the year.

Thank you to Redhill School for hosting such a meaningful celebration of the arts, and to all who made it possible for our Drama students to participate in this unforgettable experience.
