One Month In: A Year Taking Shape

- Mrs Jomari Miller

A month into the school year, our campus already feels firmly in motion, purposeful, alive, and grounded in the work of education. The initial excitement of new beginnings has now begun to settle into rhythm, routine, and resolve, and it has been a privilege to witness how our girls, staff, and families have embraced the year with such commitment.

We began the term by opening our doors and hearts to new families at the New Family Welcome Lunch. Moments like this matter deeply. Schools are built on partnership, and it was affirming to connect with parents who have entrusted us with their daughters’ growth, not only academically, but emotionally, socially, and spiritually. A strong sense of belonging is the foundation on which confidence and courage are built.

Our leadership journey was formally set in motion through the Grade 12 Leadership Induction Chapel Service. Leadership at our school is never about position alone; it is about influence, service, and example. As I shared with the girls, leadership is visible in how we speak, how we choose integrity when no one is watching, and how we carry responsibility with humility. I am encouraged by the maturity and sincerity shown by our leaders as they step into this important role.

The Grade 8 Induction Service marked a particularly meaningful milestone. For our youngest senior schoolgirls, this ceremony symbolised their official welcome into a new chapter, one that will challenge them to grow in independence, resilience, and self-belief. This sense of initiation was strengthened further through their camp experience, where friendships were forged, confidence was tested, and the seeds of unity were sown.

Our annual camps for Grades 8, 9, and 10 reminded us that education extends well beyond the classroom walls. The Grade 10 Journey in particular stands out as a defining experience. Set in the mountains, it is deliberately designed to stretch comfort zones, test resilience, and develop perseverance. These moments of physical and mental challenge often become powerful teachers, revealing to girls that they are capable of far more than they sometimes believe.

Academically, the year has begun with clarity and purpose. Teachers are deeply engaged in the curriculum, expectations have been clearly set, and our classrooms are spaces of enquiry, effort, and growth. We also took time to celebrate the excellent matric results of the previous year, a 100% Bachelors Degree Pas Rate and a distinction rate of 3.2 per candidate, a reminder of what can be achieved through consistency, partnership, and high standards. Success, when stewarded well, becomes both motivation and responsibility.

Our Grade 12 Parent Information Evening provided an important opportunity to walk alongside families as they prepare for this final and significant year. Matric is not only an academic journey; it is an emotional and social one too. Open communication, realistic expectations, and shared support are essential as we guide our young women through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Beyond the classroom, the energy of the term has been unmistakable. The sports fields and courts have come alive as girls committed to their chosen codes, and the arts programme has begun to flourish as creativity finds expression. Early fixtures and galas have already reflected commitment, teamwork, and school spirit, and it has been heartening to see girls stepping forward with courage and enthusiasm.

Looking ahead, the coming month promises further growth and engagement. Our academic staff will attend the IEB conferences, ensuring that we remain firmly aligned with national expectations while continually refining our practice. Parents can look forward to the Next Generation Career Expo, a valuable opportunity for our girls to explore pathways beyond school. The PA Cocktail Function, Open Day, and Inter-High Swimming Gala will provide further occasions to connect, celebrate, and support one another as a community.

As Head of the Senior School, I am deeply aware that education is both a privilege and a responsibility. It is also a calling, to nurture each girl with care, wisdom, and hope, trusting that the seeds we plant today will bear fruit in ways that extend far beyond her years at school. It requires clear boundaries, high expectations, and genuine care. One month in, I am encouraged by what I see: girls who are finding their footing, staff who are committed to excellence, and families who are engaged partners in this journey.

We move forward together, grounded in our values, courageous in our efforts, and united in purpose. If the first month is any indication, this year holds much promise.

Greetings in education

Jomari
