Africa Day in the Junior School

- Mrs Nelisiwe Zwane

On Thursday, 28 May, the Junior School turned into a rainbow of African colours!

To celebrate Africa Day, our students came to school dressed in outfits that tell the story of our continent. From vibrant Shweshwe outfits to beaded accessories and prints from across Africa, and African animals, the corridors were alive with colour, culture, and pride.

But the celebration didn’t stop at dressing up. During the school day, our Intermediate Phase girls became storytellers. They visited the Foundation Phase classrooms and read stories with an African context, tales of clever hares, brave queens, talking drums, and the beauty of our land.

What a special way to connect! There was buzzing laughter, wide eyes, and lots of “read it again!” As big sisters and little sisters shared the magic of stories together. Reading became more than words on a page, it became a bridge between grades and a celebration of who we are.

Through dress-up and story time, we didn’t just mark a date on the calendar. We embraced our continent. We showed appreciation for Africa’s cultures, languages, and traditions that make us who we are.

At St Mary’s DSG Pretoria, Africa Day reminded us: our roots are rich, our stories matter.
