A Season of Growth, Heritage, and Community

- Mrs Odelle Howard

There is something uniquely special about beginning a new school term in spring. It is as if nature itself reminds us that every ending carries the promise of a new beginning. Returning to school at this time of year brings with it a sense of newness and growth, much like the blossoms that brighten our gardens after the winter months. Schools, too, mirror these seasons, what we plant in dedication, effort, and love eventually blossoms into beauty, character, and achievement.

Spring invites us into a season of rebirth, where we can reset our paths, reflect on our journeys, and realign ourselves with the values and goals we hold dear. It is a season that calls us to pause and appreciate how far we have come, while courageously stepping forward into the future with renewed purpose.

September carries an added significance for us. Not only is it a month when our country celebrates Heritage Day, but it is also the month in which our school, now 146 years old, celebrates its birthday. This milestone reminds us of the richness of our heritage and the legacy entrusted to us: 146 years of celebrating and empowering confident, young women of integrity who contribute to positive change in the world.

As an Anglican girls’ school, our values form the very foundation of our identity. They anchor us in who we were, guide us in who we are, and inspire us in who we are becoming. Our heritage is not only about history, but also about the choices we make every day to live out our mission with integrity and vision.

When Bishop Henry Bousfield founded our school in 1879, he could hardly have imagined the far-reaching legacy he was beginning. Yet, through the decades, those who came before us fought to ensure the continuation of his vision, preserving the essence of our school even in times of challenge. Their commitment is a call to us: to protect, nurture, and uphold this legacy so that it may endure for generations to come.

Central to this heritage is the bond of sisterhood. At the heart of our community is the conviction that we are stronger when we rise together. We must continue to teach our girls to lift one another up, to celebrate each other’s successes, and to find strength in their unity. True sisterhood ensures that no one is left behind and that every girl learns the value of belonging, encouragement, and collective growth.

This September has been particularly meaningful for us, as we celebrated our school birthday through the Spring Fiesta, this is a joyful occasion that brought our community together in the spirit of celebration and connection. Events such as these remind us that it takes the dedication of staff, parents, and girls to create a school that is more than just a place of learning, it is a home of growth, warmth, and shared purpose.

We are deeply grateful to our parents for their unwavering support, and especially to our Parents’ Association, who so generously and freely give of their time, talents, and resources to strengthen our school. Their contribution is a reminder that the way each of us chooses to engage with the school plays a vital role in shaping a culture of positivity, growth, and shared success.

As spring continues to unfold around us, I urge us celebrate the beauty of what has grown in this special place. Let us hold onto our heritage, live our values with courage, and embrace the future with hope in the knowledge that, like the blossoms of the season, what we nurture today will bloom into tomorrow’s legacy.
